Reflection & Evaluation : Digital Citzenship

Wiki Editing and Authentic Research
The team I was in was the Digiteen Digital Etiquette group, where we posted our information on on our Digital Etiquette Page. I thought that the best research was to go to the previous digiteen digital etiquette wikipage (which i stumbled upon by accident) and read off the information from there. That wiki was very good, and was already summarized, and posted great links, which i also researched. I found that there were more ideas that i overlooked, such as email etiquette, which i contributed to the wiki because most of my team overlooked it too. The links that they had were also great, and it had looked like it was fully, thoughroughly reserached, and a lot of effort was put into it.

The links that i had found useful were:
A website where the real-life stories of misuse of the internet through bad digital etiquette
Tips for basically managing and improving how to seem to people online
previous Digital Etiquette page which helped me a LOT with my offline action project
Golden Rules Of Email Etiquette provided information about the overlooked Email Etiquette

I really think that Charlie Gandarais contributed a LOT!! So did Miller (or millerpaige). They both heavly contributed to the wiki, and tried to communicate with the other team members, while some others sparsely replied, while others just ignored Charlie, Miller, and my requests, and comments. All the team members contributed to the wiki greatly, but did not give others the oppurtunities to excel! I thought our wiki turned great, and that we covered every nook and cranny (or is it hook and granny??!?!?!) of digital etiquette.

My Personal Learning Network (PLN) was very helpful, especially google docs. Igoogle, i will keep forever, because it is THE BEST HOMEPAGE... this is because it joins google docs, reader, and google search all in one. I especially loved google docs because we got to share our documents, PDF's and powerpoints, This helped gather my research into one place, and allow my classmates to put in their research too! The best part was that we were able to upload quickly. And i still use google docs to this day!! I really think that diigo was useless here, because i already have my google reader, and notepad to post my stuff. I would have used Diigo if i didnt have google, but google is just too good!

Action Project
For the digiteen action project, we solely relied on the Digiteen Digital Etiquette Page, we created a wiki using our lesson. We couldnt put the video on due to cultural reasons. But we managed to put the lesson on there, including the videos we used, and the powerpoint. To tell you the truth, we didn't have a script like everyone else did. We didn't believe in one. We thought we could accomplish more by talking to the 4th grade students, instead of telling them.

Personally, I thought that our action project went VERY well. by the end of the lesson, we were able to get almost the WHOLE class involved, and we had questions, comments, and inquires all through our presentation. At the end, we decided to have a roleplay, because some of the kids convinced themselves that they wouldnt be hurt if people didnt treat them right, they ended up learning that people should be treated the same way you wanted to be treated. I think that if we found an interactive online game to teach digital etiquette, it will be more effective than the presentation.

Our team could have communicated our ideas more, where we all had great ideas, but we never shared. We could have been more organized, where the videos where the incorrect format, and we should have helped each other more often. Fatimah worked REALLY hard on this project, and she really excelled. She helped with everything, and tried to overcome all the issues we had without freaking out (like I did). Fatimah and I worked well together, and really hard too.

Digital Citizenship

I think that schools should develop and teach digital etiquette in their curriculum, since teaching kids will be much better than teaching adults, and teens who got used to habits already, and probably cant get rid of them. This is because, most of the teens and adults are used to treating people in a certain way, and we cant teach and old dog new tricks. But , if we taught the kids through a fun way, they would teach it to their cousins and relatives, where everybody would play a game, and they would be secretly learning. Soon they would be saying "but the teacher said its rude to interrupt people when they are typing" or they would say "but in this game in school we learnt..."

I learnt that basing your knowledge on experience is the best soloution. For both our projects, (offline action, and digiteen) we used others people experiences, and other experiences too. I also learnt that being organized is 3/4 of the work, because once you set it all up, and have 100 tiny little steps, eventually, you would be breezing through all of them. I also learnt that it is always good to listen to other people, because under that keyboard, or computer personality, they could be a whole other person, and they could even surprise you!
